6th District: Improve Zoning Process and Protect Existing Neighborhoods

02/03/2009 |

ZCC Community Meeting

At the Holmesburg Recreation Center Tuesday evening, residents and community organization leaders focused on what the priorities for zoning reform should be in Philadelphia. For the 6th Councilmanic District, a more efficient approval process and sustaining the character of existing neighborhoods are primary concerns. Participants made the following points and recommendations:

  • Make community awareness the first step in the approval process. The current zoning code allows the applicant to drive the process.
  • Think local. Provide satellite locations for obtaining information, submitting applications, and holding ZBA hearings.
  • Use technology. Make the system more efficient and easier to use by expanding online services. Include a “zoning alert system” and post the status of projects online.
  • Expand notification requirements to ensure all stakeholders are adequately informed.
  • Balance the type, quantity, and compatibility of uses in a neighborhood.
  • Define new uses and services.
  • One size doesn’t fit all. Consult the community and tailor sections of the new code to suit each district.
